Isododecane - It's Creation And Uses

Isododecane is a specialty oligomer which contains a mixture of highly branched C12 isoparaffins and mainly the 2, 2, 4, 6, 6-pentamethylheptane isomer. It is a chemical best suited for applications which calls for stringent demands in terms of purity and chemical stability. Isododecane is used for such applications because it is synthetic due to which it is in effect, free of aromatics, sulphur containing molecules and polar compounds.

Produced by a patented process from a pre-purified isobutene (branched C4) containing feedstock, Isododecane is used extensively for the most reactive (short half life) peroxide catalysts such as diacylperoxides and peroxy diesters. Isododecane is mainly used as either a solvent or as a dispersing agent for high reactivity organic peroxide catalysts in the polymerization process.

Isododecane is utilized in multiple forms in different applications, the most important of which is the production of polymer films. LDPE or Low Density Polyethylene is extensively produced around the world and is used for major food packaging applications. Isododecane is free of all aromatic and naphthenic molecules, which ensures that the finished LDPE film remains odor free. With the ability to with stand temperatures of about 80 degrees continuously, this film can be created in translucent and opaque varieties which can be flexible and tough but eventually breakable. LDPE is used for manufacturing various types of plastic containers, plastic bottles, packaging bags for computer components and a variety of molded laboratory paraphernalia.
