Methanol And Its Uses

Discovered in the mid 1800’s, Methanol (also known as wood alcohol or methyl alcohol) is the simplest form of alcohol which is a light, colorless and flammable liquid with a distinctive odor which is similar to that of ethanol. Methanol burns with a colorless flame and is a liquid at normal temperature which is why it is used as an anti-freeze, solvent, fuel as well as a denaturant.

Since its discovery, Methanol was put to use in a lot of applications. During the 1970’s, in the event of the world oil crisis, methanol received a lot of attention as a motor fuel in the United States but the demand soon came down when the prices for it went up a couple of years later. Today the most expansive use of Methanol is in the chemical industry where it is being used to make other chemicals such as plastics, paints and explosives. Apart from this, it is also being used in other parts of the world to yield a form of biodiesel. Methanol is also used as an anti-freeze in pipelines and windshield washer fluids in vehicles in the winter. The upcoming application for methanol is in the manufacturing of fuel cells with many small versions of the fuel cell already available today. Methanol is also the choice of fuel for many hikers, because of its ability to burn well from an unpressurized container.

Fine Chemicals, Their Various Types And Uses

Fine chemicals are single, complex and pure substances that are produced in very small quantities in multipurpose plants via biotechnological processes. Once produced, fine chemicals are used for specialized applications where they take the form of pharmaceutical ingredients, biocides and specialized chemicals.

Bulk chemicals on the other hand are mass produced chemicals produced in large quantities via standardized reactions. The main difference between fine chemicals and bulk chemicals is that fine chemicals are hard to make and require a large amount of research. Due to their often changing chemistry, fine chemicals are more expensive to produce. Being produced in small batches, the variety of fine chemicals is very large due to which, the chemistries of making them have to be flexible. The chemistry of these substances often changes whenever a new drug is introduced to the market. Fine chemicals produced can be differentiated into three main forms, active pharmaceutical ingredients, biocides and specialty chemicals.

The end products of active pharmaceutical ingredients usually have a different composition because fine chemicals are never sold directly but are mixed with various inert pigments, solvents and excipients and are then produced in different doses as medical drugs. Biocides which also include herbicides and pesticides are often used in agriculture to kill weeds and pests in order to increase crop yields. Specialty chemicals on the other hand are used for technical applications like an additive in plastics, ceramics, glass or even as a disinfectant or an antioxidant while some like Sulphamic acid are used for producing dyes and pigments.

Hence having multiple uses, hard to get and available in small quantities, these fine chemicals are a base for a wide variety of products. One can get the best prices for fine chemicals in UAE at Global Trust Enterprises, a general trading company in Dubai where they supply over a 100 well known, internationally renowned brands to manufacturers and suppliers in the Middle East and South Africa.

Agrochemicals And Their Uses

An agrochemical refers to a generic word representing all the chemical products used in the field of agriculture. Invented for different purposes, these chemicals have all been used differently, depending on what they were invented for. Also known as agrichemicals, they usually refer to three main categories: fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides.

Fertilizers are substances that enhance the quality of the soil by increasing its fertility upon adding nutrients to it. Divided into organic and inorganic, they have been in use for centuries. Although inorganic fertilizers in the beginning were first mined and chemically synthesized, they have been created only since the industrial revolution. Their use today is vast and it is said that more than half of the crop production today is the result of inorganic fertilizers. Organic fertilizers are basically made of naturally occurring materials such as manure, compost and seaweed whereas inorganic fertilizers are usually composed of synthetic minerals or chemicals. Inorganic fertilizers have proved to be better as compared to organic due to their better engineering and improved yields.

Being called the major force behind the productivity of the agricultural industry, insecticides include pesticides which are used against insects. If used in the right proportion and in control, insecticides protect crops from being eaten or from decaying due to pests.

Herbicides can be defined as pesticides used to kill plants. Used in gardening and agricultural applications almost everywhere today, they were introduced in the in the late 1940’s as an inexpensive way to kill weed in crop fields. Herbicides majorly are two types, selective and nonselective. The selective ones control a wide number of broadleaf weeds while causing minuscule injury to grass crops at normal use rates. The nonselective herbicides are mainly used in areas where all types of plants have to be killed.

Agrochemicals today are in a huge demand and keeping up for this demand are suppliers like Global Trust Enterprises a general trading company in Dubai that caters to the product needs of the oil, gas and petrochemical industries in the Middle East and North Africa region. They supply a large variety of industrial chemicals and fine chemicals including agrochemicals.
