An agrochemical refers to a generic word representing all the chemical products used in the field of agriculture. Invented for different purposes, these chemicals have all been used differently, depending on what they were invented for. Also known as agrichemicals, they usually refer to three main categories: fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides.

Fertilizers are substances that enhance the quality of the soil by increasing its fertility upon adding nutrients to it. Divided into organic and inorganic, they have been in use for centuries. Although inorganic fertilizers in the beginning were first mined and chemically synthesized, they have been created only since the industrial revolution. Their use today is vast and it is said that more than half of the crop production today is the result of inorganic fertilizers. Organic fertilizers are basically made of naturally occurring materials such as manure, compost and seaweed whereas inorganic fertilizers are usually composed of synthetic minerals or chemicals. Being called the major force behind the productivity of the agricultural industry, insecticides include pesticides which are used against insects. If used in the right proportion and in control, insecticides protect crops from being eaten or from decaying due to pests.

Herbicides can be defined as pesticides used to kill plants. Used in gardening and agricultural applications almost everywhere today, they were introduced in the in the late 1940’s as an inexpensive way to kill weed in crop fields. Herbicides majorly are two types, selective and nonselective. The selective ones control a wide number of broadleaf weeds while causing minuscule injury to grass crops at normal use rates. The nonselective herbicides are mainly used in areas where all types of plants have to be killed.
