Chemicals Involved In The Making Of Synthetic Lubricants

Ever wondered what goes into the making of a synthetic lubricant? Synthetic lubricants have come a long way since the 1940s, being invented for the main reason that the demand for lubricants was so high that its production could not keep up due to the lack of resources and hence an artificial blend had to be created. Synthetic lubricants soon rose in demand because unlike petroleum based lubricants, synthetic lubricants didn’t freeze in subzero situations and could be engineered for many applications in extreme situations and environments.

There are a lot of chemicals that go into the making of synthetic lubricants these days. Tetradecene-1 (C14H28)  a clear, water-white mobile liquid can be used in the production of amines and amine oxides, mercaptans, oxo alcohols, alkylated aromatics, alpha olefin sulfonates, synthetic lubricants, epoxides, tanning oils and synthetic fatty acids. Some chemicals like Linear Alpha Olefin blends (C1214, C1416, C1618, C2024 and C20+ olefins) have a wide range of uses and can be used in the production of amines and amine oxides, oxo alcohols, alkylated aromatics, epoxides, tanning oils, synthetic lubricants, lubricant additives, alpha olefin sulfonates and synthetic fatty acids as well. While Durasyn® Polyalpha Olefins have physical and chemical properties of PAOs are ideal to meet the demanding requirements of formulations for high quality synthetic lubricants.
